Key Lake Operation 2007

DISCOVERED:   1975 by Uranerz Exploration and Mining Limited
OPERATION:   In operation since 1983, Key Lake is the largest uranium milling operation in the world and processes approximately 17% of the world's annual U3O8 production. Key Lake received ISO 14001 environmental management certification in January 2003.
CAPACITY:   The Key Lake mill has a rated annual capacity of 18.7 million lbs. U3O8 (7,193 tonnes uranium), the largest capacity in the world.
PRODUCTION:   18.7 million lbs. U3O8  (7,193 tonnes uranium) was produced in 2007 from ore transported from McArthur River.
RESERVES:   Mining no longer occurs at Key Lake. The mill now processes ore from McArthur River.
PLANS FOR 2008:  
  • Complete installation of equipment to remove ammonia from groundwater recovery wells
  • Continue with assessment of plans to increase licensed production capacity to 22 million lbs. U3O8 annually
  • Complete modifications to improve the leaching circuit, with conversion to full atmospheric leaching to reduce worker gamma radiation exposure
  • Complete installation of equipment to reduce molybdenum and selenium in effluent
  • Complete feasibility study for the Key Lake revitalization project to create a long-term regional milling centre
