McClean Lake and Cluff Lake Projects
April 22, 2005
McClean Lake
The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) held its second of two public hearings for McClean Lake's early licence renewal (with an amendment to expand the JEB mill to receive and process Cigar Lake ore) in Ottawa on April 6. Mining of the Sue A open pit next to the mined out Sue C pit, along with the hiring of about 60 new employees, could begin in July.
Sue E open pit mining could begin in late 2005 pending regulatory approval. Saskatchewan Environment and the CNSC have completed the technical review of the Sue E Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). This EIS was available for a 30-day public review starting March 16. Copies are located to 18 locations in the north and 7 in the south. For information on these locations or for a copy of the EIS Executive Summary, please call 1-888-9COGEMA. The CNSC has scheduled June 29 for the one-day Ottawa public hearing on the Sue E EIS.
Another planned activity on the McClean Lake site is the mining equipment development and testing of alternate mining techniques conducted from the surface for small underground deposits. This could begin in 2005 pending regulatory approval.
McClean Lake has not had a spill since the last Community Update. The concentrations of elements contained in the water discharges during March were well below the limits set by the regulatory agencies.
Cluff Lake
The 2-year decommissioning program began in August 2004. Most of the rest of the decommissioning work, including the Claude pit area, DJX pit area, the rest of the mill and other facility demolition, will be completed in 2005.
Cluff Lake has not had a spill since the last Community Update. Concentrations of elements contained in the water discharges from the treatment plant during March were well below the limits set by the regulatory agencies.

World 2004 U3O8 Production
World uranium production reached 102.2 million pounds in 2004, an increase of 11% from 91.9 million pounds in 2003. Much of this came from increased production at McArthur River (about 2.6 million pounds more than in 2003 when the water inflow occurred). Canada is still the top producing country with 30.2 million pounds - all from northern Saskatchewan - comprising 30% of world production.

Public Consultation 2005
AREVA and Cameco are conducting a joint northern public consultation program. The companies were in the Athabascan communities during the week of April 11, but the Black Lake and Fond du Lac meetings were postponed due to deaths in the communities. The following week's events were in the west side communities. The third week will include Pinehouse (April 25) and La Ronge (April 26). Please check the schedule on the next page. The meetings have been advertised extensively in the north. This year, the northern meetings will include food, door prizes and a fishing lure for anyone attending. Meetings are also scheduled for:
| – |
May 3 at the Prince Albert Inn (Marquis Room) at 7:30 p.m. |
| – |
May 4 in Saskatoon at the Radisson Hotel (Michelangelo C Room) at 7:30 p.m. |
Saskatchewan Uranium Mining
Public Consultation 2005
Cameco and AREVA subsidiary, COGEMA Resources, invite you to a community meeting to review the uraniumindustry in northern Saskatchewan. Come hear our plans over a community meal, and discuss any concerns or questions you may have. In addition to door prizes, we'll also show our appreciation for your participation with a "Northern Energy" fishing lure that you can take home.
