McClean Lake and Cluff Lake Projects

June 24, 2002

McCLEAN LAKE

Congratulations to Robert Fern, heavy equipment mechanic apprentice from Fond du Lac, who has passed his Inter Provincial Journeyman's exam. Robert is the first COGEMA Resources McClean Lake apprentice to achieve this goal!

McClean Lake has not had a spill since the last Community Update. The concentrations of elements contained in the water discharges from the JEB mill and Sue mine treatment plants during May were well below the limits set by the regulatory agencies.

CLUFF LAKE

The last ore truck left the Dominique Janine underground mine on May 31. The DJU mine is now closed. Its entrance ramp and other openings have been backfilled to within 10 metres of the surface. Milling will continue to process the remaining ore stockpiles by the end of the year. The mill is operating on a week-on/week-off basis.

The CIM John T. Ryan regional safety award was presented to the Cluff Lake mine at the Saskatchewan Mining Association Mine Rescue Competition.

Cluff Lake has not had a spill since the last Community Update. Concentrations of elements contained in the water discharges from the treatment plant during May were well below the limits set by the regulatory agencies.

HEAVY HAUL AGREEMENT

The heavy haul agreement between the provincial government and COGEMA Resources and Cameco is now in its eight year. In that time, the companies have spent about $9 million on road improvements between La Ronge and Points North. The agreement allows the companies to haul weights greater than normally allowed under provincial highway regulations. In return, a portion of the savings from hauling those greater amounts is put in a fund and used to improve the road surface.

When the partnership began back in 1994, the projects were directly linked to improving safety by getting rid of dangerous corners or hills with poor visibility. With those jobs now complete, work planned for 2002 includes $1.35 million in road improvements on Highways 102 and 905. To this point, Highways 102 and 905 have been improved with no additional cost to the taxpayer. The improvements are over and above what the Department of Highways and Transportation would normally do.
