Protecting health, safety and the environment is a fundamental principle underlying all of the uranium production activities carried out by AREVA Resources Canada. This starts with exploration, and continues throughout the life of a project - planning and design, operation, and ultimately ending with decommissioning and reclamation.

  • All parts of the McClean Lake operation incorporate state-of-the-art features for environmental protection.
  • An extensive environmental monitoring program is carried out to identify any changes from the original baseline conditions.
  • AREVA Resources Canada Inc's occupational health and safety programs are also state-of-the-art, both for radiation protection and for protection against the conventional hazards present in a large industrial plant.
  • AREVA Resources Canada has extensive training programs both for plant operation and for protection of employees and the environment. The McClean Lake operation is developing a comprehensive quality assurance management system that will apply to all activities on site. In late 2000, the McClean Lake mining, milling and support services operation was certified to the ISO 14001 standard for environmental management systems.
AREVA's technicians regularly check radiation levels in mill operating areas.

The conceptual decommissioning plan for the McClean Lake site is supported by a $35 million financial assurance. Decommissioning and reclamation will ensure that uranium production and protection of health, safety and the environment go hand in hand, now and in sustaining the environment for the future.

2000 Dosimetry Results

The results shown in this figure clearly demonstrate that radiation doses are well below both the regulatory limit and the original target levels.
