Resources GIves Big Boost to New La Loche Health Centre
COGEMA Resources today presented the first
installment of a $100,000 total donation towards the equipment and
furnishings of the new La Loche Health Centre.
"COGEMA's dedication to supporting the people of
the north has given us a tremendous boost in equipping our new health
centre," said La Loche Mayor John Janvier. "The Province's commitment
was specifically for construction. It was up to the local community
to appeal to the benevolence of corporations like COGEMA to help
fund equipment and furnishings."
COGEMA President and CEO, Arnaud de Bourayne, presented
the $50,000 cheque. "The Northern Village of La Loche has been one
of the primary impact communities related to our Cluff Lake operations,"
said de Bourayne. "We are pleased to continue to be a part of the
community through this donation."
"We consider this donation an investment in our
employees and their families," continued de Bourayne. "Over half
of the COGEMA Resources and contractor employees at our mine sites
are residents of Saskatchewan's north. Plus almost half our expenditures
for goods and services go to northern-based companies, so our business
really has an impact on everyone in the north."
Keewatin Yathe District Health Board Chair Max
Morin said, "the facility is a result of many years of lobbying
and many months of planning by the people of La Loche. We are overwhelmed
to receive COGEMA's financial support."
The 3,400-m 2 integrated health centre is scheduled
to open its doors on June 1, 2001. It will house community based
and acute care services, addiction detoxification, a medical clinic
and long-term care to accommodate the aging population. "The source
of greatest pride among planning committee members is the spiritual
component of the centre," said Morin. "It respects the spiritual
needs of the residents in recovery. COGEMA has helped to make that
possible."
De Bourayne responded by saying, "COGEMA Resources
is here for the long term. Our financial and other commitments to
northern people are evidence of our commitment to this region. We
will continue to be a good corporate citizen in Saskatchewan and
a supplier of uranium around the world. We will continue to be an
employer of choice and an active member of the community."
Headquartered in Saskatoon, COGEMA Resources operates
mining and milling facilities at Cluff Lake in Northern Saskatchewan,
is operator and majority owner of the McClean Lake and Midwest uranium
projects, and part owner of the Cigar Lake, McArthur River and Key
Lake uranium projects.
