NEWS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: March 26,
1998
COGEMA's CLUFF LAKE LICENSE
EXTENDED
COGEMA Resources Inc.
is pleased to announce that its license for the Cluff Lake mine
has been extended for a nine month period. News of the license extension
was released by the Atomic Energy Control Board in Ottawa today.
"We are particularly
pleased for our employees, their families, and the Northern communities
who are involved in our mining operations", said Arnaud de
Bourayne, President & CEO of COGEMA Resources Inc. "This
extension allows for the continued operation of Cluff Lake and it's
contribution to the Saskatchewan economy", he said.
However, Mr. de Bourayne
noted that even though the license has been extended, certain conditions
were imposed which limit the extent of the operations. "We
realize that there is still work to be done to ensure the future
operation of the mine", de Bourayne stated, "however we
are confident that we will be able to meet the conditions imposed
on us".
The Atomic Energy Control
Board stated that while COGEMA has been addressing the issues, the
extension will allow the company additional time to complete its
studies.
The Atomic Energy Control
Board has requested that COGEMA Resources submit additional information
regarding certain operating practices by June 30, 1998. If this
information is acceptable to the Atomic Energy Control Board, COGEMA
Resources will be allowed to resume full mining operations.
De Bourayne stated
that the tremendous support received by the Company from the Northern
communities and the people of Saskatchewan was instrumental in the
license renewal.
COGEMA has been operating
the Cluff Lake uranium mine in northwest Saskatchewan since 1980.
It is the second largest industrial employer in Northern Saskatchewan
and with its contractors, employs 536 people at Cluff Lake.
