Northern Saskatchewan Scholarship Program
SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM FOR NORTHERN RESIDENTS
2007-2008
Education is the key to continued development in the north. AREVA awards scholarships to northern students attending post-secondary institutions.
Starting with the Academic Year 1979 - 1980, AREVA Resources Canada Inc. (formerly known as COGEMA Resources Inc.) has made available University and Institute Scholarships to qualifying Residents of Northern Saskatchewan.
NUMBER OF SCHOLARSHIPS
UNIVERSITY
Eight University Scholarships will be made available each year.
INSTITUTE
Four Institute Scholarships will be made available each year.
LENGTH OF SCHOLARSHIPS
UNIVERSITY
Each University Scholarship will be for one academic year. A recipient may be awarded a maximum of four scholarships over four academic years.
INSTITUTE
Each Institute Scholarship will be for one academic year. A recipient may be awarded a maximum of three scholarships over three academic years.
AMOUNT AND METHOD OF PAYMENT OF SCHOLARSHIPS
UNIVERSITY
Each University Scholarship will be in the amount of $5,000 each.
The amount of the Scholarship will be reviewed annually by the AREVA Scholarship Committee taking into consideration rises in the cost of University Education. The Scholarship will be made payable to the candidate in two equal installments.
INSTITUTE
Each Institute Scholarship will be in the amount of $4,000 each.
The amount of the Scholarship will be reviewed annually by the AREVA Scholarship Committee taking into consideration rises in the cost of Institute Education. The Scholarship will be made payable to the candidate in two equal installments.
ELIGIBILITY OF SCHOLARSHIPS
UNIVERSITY
Candidates for the University Scholarship must:
- Qualify as a “Northerner”* in accordance with the definition outlined in the Surface Lease Agreement.
- Qualify for entrance to a University in the province of Saskatchewan.
- Be applying for a University Course, which in the opinion of the AREVA Scholarship Selection Committee, would be of benefit to the North.
- Forward an official copy of his or her marks to the Northern Affairs Office upon completion of each semester.
- Be willing to sign an agreement outlining the conditions of the Scholarship.
INSTITUTE
Candidates for the Institute Scholarship must:
- Qualify as a “Northerner”* in accordance with the definition outlined in the Surface Lease Agreement.
- Qualify for entrance to an Institute program in the province of Saskatchewan.
- Be applying for an Institute Course, which in the opinion of the AREVA Scholarship Selection Committee, would be of benefit to the North.
- Forward an official copy of his or her marks to the Northern Affairs Office upon completion of each semester.
- Be willing to sign an agreement outlining the conditions of the Scholarship.
* “Northerner” - A person who has resided in the Northern Administration District or in the Towns of La Ronge or Creighton, or in the area of the Municipal Corporation of Uranium City and District, for a period of ten (10) years or one-half of his age, whichever is less.
SELECTION OF CANDIDATES FOR SCHOLARSHIPS
All applications received will be reviewed and those eligible will initially be interviewed by a representative of AREVA Resources Canada Inc. Following the interview an academic package containing all pertinent information will be prepared for review by AREVA’s Manager, Northern Affairs and presented at the Annual Scholarship Selection Committee meeting. The final selection will result in awards made to eight University and four Institute recipients for that academic year.
SELECTION OF RECIPIENTS OF SCHOLARSHIPS
UNIVERSITY AND INSTITUTE
The AREVA Scholarship Selection Committee will make the selection of the recipients for the University and Institute scholarships from the qualifying candidates. The AREVA Scholarship Selection Committee is currently composed of the following:

CONTINUATION OF THE SCHOLARSHIPS
UNIVERSITY AND INSTITUTE
The continuation of a University or Institute Scholarship will depend upon the following:
- Maintaining passing marks.
- Attending the required number of classes to qualify for examinations.
- Forward an official copy of his or her marks to the Northern Affairs Office upon completion of each semester.
- Notifying AREVA by re-applying on or before the last Friday in June of each year as to the intention to continue the course the following year.
EMPLOYMENT
AREVA Resources Canada Inc. does not guarantee employment for recipients but will give preferential consideration to recipients for employment following the completion of their courses.
ADMINISTRATION OF THE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
ADMINISTRATION
The Administrator, who is AREVA’s Manager, Northern Affairs, will have the following duties:
- Yearly advertising of the program.
- Convening meetings of the AREVA Scholarship Committee.
- Preparing minutes of the AREVA Scholarship Committee.
- Preparing a list of the recipients and the cheques to be issued to successful candidate.
- Review end of semester transcripts received from candidate.
- Preparing an annual report on the operation of the program.
PAYMENT OF FUNDS
An amount of money to support each Scholarship awarded by the AREVA Scholarship Committee will be paid bi-annually by AREVA to the candidate.
This payment will be one-half the amount of the scholarship made at the beginning of each semester.
AREVA will satisfy itself that the candidate is maintaining a satisfactory record with respect to attendance and grades. If, for any reason, a candidate becomes ineligible for scholarship funds during the course of the academic year, no further funds will be forwarded to that candidate.
